Building ESG Capability from the Ground Up in Energy Tech

Bluecurrent ESG and Sustainability Success Story Australia

    About the Client

Bluecurrent is a fast-growing energy technology company managing over two million smart meters across Australia and New Zealand. As it scaled its operations and customer base, Bluecurrent recognised the growing importance of sustainability to its commercial success, customer expectations, and long-term resilience.

    The Challenge

As a technically strong business still in the early stages of formalising its ESG approach, Bluecurrent recognised the need to develop a structured sustainability strategy that could meet evolving requirements from customers, regulators, and internal stakeholders. Key focus areas included defining a clear ESG strategy and roadmap, establishing a credible carbon emissions baseline across Scope 1, 2, and key Scope 3 categories, responding to increasing customer requests for Scope 3 emissions data, achieving Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) certification to demonstrate long-term emissions reduction commitments, understanding and addressing climate-related risks and opportunities, and building governance, processes, and internal capability to align ESG with business growth.

    Our Approach

ESG Strategy partnered with Bluecurrent as a hands-on strategic advisor, working closely with leaders across sustainability, engineering, and operations. Our support included designing and embedding Bluecurrent's first Sustainability Strategy tailored to sector risks and customer demands; leading a Materiality Assessment to clarify the most important environmental, social, and governance issues for staff, customers, and partners; building Bluecurrent's first full carbon emissions baseline including upstream and operational Scope 3 sources; managing the SBTi certification process from start to finish including methodology selection, emissions modelling, leadership engagement, board sign-off, and final submission; conducting a supply chain ESG assessment and initiating engagement with key suppliers to strengthen Scope 3 readiness; and supporting executive and board engagement on climate risk, governance, and ESG alignment with strategic objectives.
